Dolomites in Autumn
Dolomites are one of the most beautiful and photogenic mountain landscapes on Earth. They have such diversity from jagged peaks, alpine hills and crystal-clear alpine lakes to mountain tops and charming mountain towns. They are even named the Patagonia of Europe. Due to its unique geology and breathtaking beauty, the region was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009—calling it an archetype of a Dolomitic landscape.
Late September is a great season to visit Dolomites for many reasons. The trees are dressed with the autumn colors and the places are quieter with less people and more peaceful, since the summer tourist period has ended. The weather is not that cold but some of the highest peaks may have the first layer of snow.
You'll be guided along the way by 2 profesional photographers, George Avgerinos and Stelios Avgerinos. Both are landscape photographers for more than 20 years and they will share with you their tips and techniques so you can maximize your opportunities of capturing great photos. They know the area well and will take you to some of the most beautiful locations of the Dolomites at the right time of day. Over the course of the workshop, you’ll learn about correct exposure, focusing, camera settings, how to focus stack for extreme sharpness through an entire scene, how to best utilize neutral density and polarizing filters, and much more. The workshop is open to all levels, beginner, amateur, enthusiast and semi-pro photographers.

Day 1 (September 28)
We will pick you up at the airport of Venice (Marco Polo) in the morning no later than 12:00 am. We meet and saying hello to each other. After that we start our drive through the Dolomites. Our first base for the first 3 days will be in Cortina d' Ampezzo. It is about 2.30 hours drive to reach to Cortina so expect to be there at about 14.30. After check in and some rest at our hotel we are leaving for our first shooting location at the spectacular peaks of Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
We will walk around the base of the Tre Cime to shoot the magnificent peaks from a lower vintage point during the sunset and the last light of the day. After the sunset shoot we will return to our hotel for dinner. During dinner we'll have the chance to get to know each other better while enjoining some of the great food of the local cuisine.
On our first morning we shoot the sunrise at lake Antorno. This is a beautiful alpine lake which offers some great photo opportunities. During the sunrise the Tre Cime peaks are illuminated by the sun and are reflected in the waters of the lake. After the sunrise shooting we return to the hotel for breakfast. We will have a short rest for a few hours before our first processing session.
During our first post-processing session we will see how to get the most out of the images we took using Lightroom and Photoshop.
After the session we will have lunch and then we will leave again for Tre Cime. This time we'll go upper into the mountain until the Refugio Locatelli where we will spent all afternoon. We'll have the chance to get to know the area better and find a good location for the sunset. After the sunset we will go back to Refugio Auronzo and have dinner at the restaurant. After dinner, if the sky is clear, we will shoot the stars and the milky way above the Tre Cime peaks.
On our second morning shoot we are heading to Lago Limides to shoot the sunrise at this beautiful lake. We spend the morning shooting from various spots and after that we are going back to the hotel for breakfast.
After some rest to our rooms we'll have our second post-processing session. Again this session will be tailored to your needs. When the session finishes we'll have lunch at the restaurant and take it easy for a couple of hours. For this afternoon we are heading to the most known lake and the most photographed one of the Dolomites, the beautiful Lago di Braies. With it's turquoise waters, the boat house and the beautiful scenery around it offers some great photographic opportunities all around the lake.
On day 4 we have an early rise and visit the Passo Giau to capture the sunrise and the first light of sun illuminating the beautiful peaks reflected in the lake. After the shoot we return to our hotel for breakfast. At 10 o clock we take our stuff and check out from the hotel for our final base, which will be near Ortisei. We will stay there for the next days. On our way there we will make a stop to photograph the small gem of the Dolomites, the Lago di Carezza.
At the afternoon we will visit the Alp di Siusi, to shoot the sunset at this magnificent plateau. The beauty of the Alpe di Siusi area is legendary. It's Europe’s largest high alpine meadow, with beautiful wooden huts and pine trees and the large peaks of Lankofel and Platkofel behind them. There are so many spots for great photos here and we'll have a lot of time to find the composition we like the most before sunset. After the shoot we'll have dinner at a restaurant in town.
On our 5th day for the morning shoot we are visiting again Alpe di Siusi, this time to photograph it in a completely different light. Very often, this time of the year, the vast meadow is covered by morning mist, giving a mystical look to the valley as the sun rises behind the Sassolungo. We'll take our time here as the morning light offers some unique photo opportunities at this place. Right after the shoot we'll go for coffee and breakfast to the town.
After we return to the hotel we'll have our final post-processing session and cover all the techniques we have learned so far to take the most out of our images.
For sunset we are visiting Val di Funes, shooting the beautiful San Giovanni church located right in front of the Odle/Geisler mountain massif as it's illuminated be the last rays of sun. After shooting we'll have our last dinner together as the workshop has come to an end. During dinner we'll have a change to share our experiences and thoughts of this magnificent place and of the workshop and leave away with great memories and new friends.
